A little about our lodge…We are located just outside of Soldotna, approximately 150 miles south of Anchorage. The Forest View Lodge (FVL) is about one-half a mile from the city of Soldotna. Soldotna offers many activities and is centrally located to many other cities with interesting history/activities. The famous Kenai River, runs through (well technically around) the heart of Soldotna and is just a mile or so from our lodge. Drift river trips or bank fishing, if you have your own gear, and white water rafting are a few activities to start. The Soldotna airport offers fly-in fishing/sightseeing tours, and as a pilot myself…this is the only way to truly see Alaska. Many choices are offered from wildlife to glacier viewing. Some neighboring cities close by offer a few of the following activities:
Kasilof – (South of Soldotna, 30 min. drive) one of the oldest Russian settlements in Alaska, has the Kasilof river which is also great salmon fishing.
Ninilchik – (30 min. south of Kasilof) features additional salmon fishing in Deep Creek with the option of salt water Halibut fishing out in the Cook Inlet. Halibut are my personal favorite when it comes to eating fish. J There is also an old Russian Orthodox Church which is a lovely representation of some of the history found in South Central Alaska.
Homer – (30 min south of Ninilchick) this is a quaint fishing town located on beautiful Kachemak Bay surrounded by mountains. The drive alone on a clear day is worth the trip. Halibut fishing is the most popular out of Homer, and the neighboring cities of Halibut Cove and Seldovia, only reachable by boat or airplane, represent the remoteness of many Alaskan towns.
Seward – (North East of Soldotna – just over an hour drive) yet another fishing city offering salt water salmon and halibut charters. Kenai Princess Cruises also provides a wonderful boat adventure including whale, seal/sea lions, and glacier viewing on the back side of the famous Harding ice fields. Seward also features the Sea Life Center which displays much of the aquatic life located in/around Alaska in a very educational setting. One can also drive/hike up to Exit Glacier, just on the outskirts of Seward.
Your drive from Anchorage to Soldotna is also breathtakingly beautiful and one stop that may be of interest is Portage Glacier. You can drive right up and many times catch a portion of the glacier calving off.
